Rajaraja Chola I. ( Tamil இராஜராஜ சோழன் Irājarāja Cōḻaṉ; † 1014 ) was an important king of the Tamil dynasty of the Chola . He came to power after the death of his brother Adithya II and ruled between 985 and 1014 AD. Rajaraja led the prime of his dynasty by expanding the empire to Sri Lanka in the south and Kalinga ( Odisha ) in the northeast. He waged war against the Chalukya in the north and the Pandya in the south. With the conquest of the Chalukya capital Vengi, Rajaraja established a branch line of the Chola in the Chalukya empire.

The Chola Empire during Rajaraja's reign

Rajaraja reformed the administrative system by dividing his empire into individual districts. Under his rule, the Brihadisvara Temple was built in Thanjavur . His son Rajendra I brought the Chola Empire to its greatest extent.
