Tirubuvanam (also: Thirupuvanam , Tamil : திருபுவனம் Tirupuvaṉam ) is a village with an estimated 1000 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu in the Thanjavur district .

location

Tirubuvanam is only about 6.5 km (driving distance) northeast of Kumbakonam at an altitude of about 29 m above sea level. d. The coromandel coast on the Bay of Bengal near the city of Karaikal is about 52 km to the east. The climate is subtropically hot; Rain falls almost only in the monsoon months August to December.

population

The majority (approx. 89%) of the inhabitants of the small town are Hindus and about 11% are Muslims . The main language is Tamil , which is spoken by 79% of the population as their mother tongue. There is also a larger minority of Saurashtri speakers (18%) and a smaller Telugu- speaking minority (3%). In contrast to northern India, the male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same.

economy

Agriculture in the surrounding villages still forms the economic basis for the settlement of craftsmen, small traders and smaller service companies in the city. The local silk weavers have formed a cooperative, the largest in Tamil Nadu.

history

In the last quarter of the 12th century, the Chola ruler Kulothunga III. (r. 1179-1216) the capital of the empire from Darasuram to Tirubuvanam and commissioned the construction of the Kampaharesvara temple , consecrated to the Hindu god Shiva , which is one of the most important buildings of the Chola architecture , although it is not - like all of them older temples of Tanjavur , Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram - part of the UNESCO World HeritageGreat Temples of the Chola Dynasty ”.

  • The existing of a large and several smaller temples temple area of Kampaharesvara temple is surrounded by a high wall, which on the east side of a transversely mounted and representative Gopuram - Torbau is broken. One enters the temple through several raised lobbies ( mandapas ) , one of which houses a reclining Nandi bull. The highlight is the barely exposed cella ( garbhagriha ) at the end of the building line , which is elevated on the outside by a pyramidal but multi-tiered temple tower ( vimana ) . On the different levels of the tower facade there are differently designed and decoratively painted shrines that underline the religious and sovereign character of the temple.
  • The temple district also includes a Sarabeswara temple, which is significant for the region and which is dedicated to a winged deity who is worshiped in large parts of southern India and combines the aspects of Shiva / Bhairava , Vishnu / Garuda and Narasimha . The terrifying goddesses Kali and Durga are also sometimes used to explain the strange hybrid being.
