The Kaveri Delta, to which the Taluk Kumbakonam belongs, is a region rich in cultural history with numerous important Hindu sites. The main town Kumbakonam is an important temple city. The Mahamaham festival takes place here every twelve years and attracts millions of pilgrims. But there are also numerous old Hindu temples in the villages in the vicinity of Kumbakonam. 19 of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ) are in the Taluk Kumbakonam. These are three temples in Kumbakonam City (the Adi-Kumbeswarar Temple , the Nageswaraswamy Temple and the Kasi-Viswanathar Temple ) and the Shiva temple of Kottaiyur , Innambur , Thiruppurambiyam , Thirusakthimutram , Patteeswaram , Palaiyarai , Thiruvalanjuli , Thirunageswaram , Thiruppandurai , Thirunariyur , Alagaputhur , Sivapuram , Sakkottai , Marudanallur , Thirucherai and Nalur Mayanam . The Shiva temple of Thirunageswaram also houses a side shrine for Rahu , the personification of the descending lunar node , and thus belongs to the Navagraha temples , a group of nine temples that are dedicated to the Hindu planetary deities . Finally, one of the six pilgrimage sites of the popular god Murugan ( Arupadaiveedu ) is located in Swamimalai .
