Visalur is a village with approx. 700 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . In the middle of the village is a medieval Shiva temple from the time of the Chola (around 900).

location

Visalur lies at a height of approx. 120 m above sea level. d. About 17 km (driving distance) northwest of the district capital Pudukkottai . The Jain temple of Sittannavasal is only about 13 km to the northeast . The almost tropical climate is mostly humid; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months October to December.

history

The area of ​​the entire Pudukkottai district belonged to the Pallava Empire in the early Middle Ages , which was gradually taken over by the regaining Chola Empire in the 9th century . In the 13th century, the Madurai- based Pandya dynasty took power, but gave it to the Vijayanagar Empire in the 14th century .

Attractions

The only place of interest is the Vasukisvaramudaiya temple , which dates back to the end of the 9th century and is dedicated to the god Shiva . It consists only of a portico-like short vestibule ( mandapa ) with two supports and a square cella ( garbhagriha ) raised by a building-like tower structure with a hood-like roof . While the outer walls of the cella are only structured by pilasters , but otherwise do not show any decorative figures, there are four reclining Nandi bulls and a few small figures of gods above the surrounding eaves cornice .
