The Taluk Papanasam ( Tamil : பாபநாசம் வட்டம் ) is a Taluk (sub-district) of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The main town is the eponymous city of Papanasam . The Taluk Papanasam has around 270,000 inhabitants.
geography
The Taluk Papanasam is located in the Kaveri Delta in the east of the Thanjavur district. The area of the Taluk is bounded in the north by the Kollidam , the northernmost estuary of the Kaveri River, and is traversed by several estuary branches of the Kaveri flowing in a west-east direction. From north to south these are the Kaveri main arm, the Arasalar , the Tirumalarajanar , the Kudamurutti , the Vettar and the Vennar .
The Taluk Papanasam borders in the east on the Taluk Kumbakonam (district Thanjavur), in the southeast on the taluks Valangaiman and Needamangalam (both districts Tiruvarur ), in the south and west on the taluks Orathanadu , Thanjavur and Thiruvaiyaru (all district Thanjavur) and in the north the talks Ariyalur and Udayarpalayam (both Ariyalur district ).

According to the 2011 census, the Taluk Papanasam has 273,511 inhabitants. 77 percent of the population lives in rural areas and 23 percent in cities. 81 percent of the residents of Taluk Papanasam are Hindus , 14 percent are Muslims and 4 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue according to the 2001 census.

The Kaveri Delta, to which the Taluk Papanasam belongs, is a region rich in culture and history with a high density of important Hindu temples. Seven of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ) are located in the area of the Taluk . These are the Shiva temples of Vijayamangai , Thiruvaigavur , Vadakurangaduthurai , Pasupathikoil , Chakkarapalli , Thirukkarugavur and Papanasam . Of the 108 shrines of Tamil Vishnuism ( Divya Desams ), three are in the Taluk Papanasam. These are the Vishnu temples of Vadakurangaduthurai, Kabisthalam and Adhanur .
