The Taluk Thiruvaiyaru ( Tamil : திருவையாறு வட்டம் ) is a Taluk ( sub- district) of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The main town is the eponymous city of Thiruvaiyaru . The Taluk Thiruvaiyaru has around 190,000 inhabitants.
geography
The Taluk Thiruvaiyaru is located in the Kaveri Delta in the west of the Thanjavur district. The westernmost point of the taluk is at the Grand Anicut Dam , where the Kaveri River divides into several estuary arms. The area of the Taluk is elongated in a west-east direction and extends between the northernmost estuary Kollidam in the north and the Vennar in the south. In between flow the main Kaveri arm and the Kudamurutti .
The Taluk Thiruvaiyaru borders in the east on the Taluk Papanasam , in the south on the Taluk Thanjavur (both district Thanjavur), in the southwest on the Taluk Thiruverumbur , in the west on the Taluk Srirangam , in the northwest on the Taluk Lalgudi (all district Tiruchirappalli ) and in the North to the Taluk Ariyalur ( Ariyalur District ).

According to the 2011 census, the Taluk Thiruvaiyaru has 185,803 inhabitants. 79 percent of the population lives in rural areas and 21 percent in cities. 81 percent of the residents of Taluk Thiruvaiyaru are Hindus , 12 percent are Christians and 7 percent Muslim . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue according to the 2001 census.

The Kaveri Delta, to which the Taluk Thiruvaiyaru belongs, is a region rich in culture and history with a high density of important Hindu temples. Ten of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ) are located in the area of the Taluk . These are the Shiva temples of Thiruppayanam , Thiruvaiyaru , Thillaisthanam , Perumpuliyur , Thirukkanur , Thirukkattupalli , Tiruvalampozhil , Melathiruppanthuruthi , Kandiyur and Tiruchotruthurai . With the Vishnu temples of Koviladi and Kandiyur, two of the 108 shrines of Tamil Vishnuism ( Divya Desams ) are also located in the Taluk Thiruvaiyaru. In Poondi there is also an important Catholic pilgrimage site, the Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes .
