Thiruvaiyaru ( Tamil : திருவையாறு Tiruvaiyāṟu [ ˈt̪irɯˌʋai̯jaːrɯ ], also Tiruvaiyaru ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 16,000 (2011 census).

Thiruvaiyaru is located in the Kaveri Delta on the north bank of the Kaveri main arm in the Thanjavur district, 14 kilometers north of the district capital Thanjavur . The distance to Chennai (Madras), the capital of Tamil Nadu, is 340 kilometers. Thiruvaiyaru is the capital of the talk Thiruvaiyaru .

Thiruvaiyaru is home to an important Hindu temple, the Aiyarappar temple, which is dedicated to the god Shiva . The sanctuary was built in the 7th / 8th Century sung in the Tevaram hymns of the poet saints Appar , Sundarar and Sambandar . Thiruvaiyaru is one of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ).

92 percent of Thiruvaiyaru's residents are Hindus , 5 percent are Christians and 2 percent are Muslims . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
