The Ranthambhore National Park ( Hindi : रणथम्भौर राष्ट्रीय अभ्यारण्य raṇthambhaur rāṣṭrīya abhyāraṇya ) is an Indian national park in the state of Rajasthan . It got its name after the 10th century fortress Ranthambhor in the national park area . The area has been rated II by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources . The area with its little shy tiger was one of the flagship reserves of Project Tiger , but there were severe losses within the tiger population through poaching in the 1990s . Together with the adjacent Kaila Devi game reserve and other smaller protected areas, the national park forms the Ranthambhore tiger reserve.

location

It is 282 square kilometers and is located in the Sawai Madhopur district in eastern Rajasthan. The closest major cities are Kota 110 kilometers southwest and Jaipur 180 kilometers northwest. The park is located between the Banas and Chambal rivers .

history

In 1955, the almost 400 km² Sawai Madhopur game reserve was created by the Indian government. In 1973 the reserve became part of Project Tiger , which was supposed to protect the Indian tiger populations. A core area of ​​282 square kilometers received national park status in 1980 and today forms the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve together with the Keladevi Sanctuary , the Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary and other forests .

Ranthambhore is on the eastern edge of the Aravalli range , not far from the Vindhya Mountains . Dry rocky areas, some lakes and smaller watercourses are mainly bordered by dry forests. The 10th century fortress Ranthambhor rises majestically over the reserve.

The area is known for its Bengal tigers , which are not shy and can be easily observed even during the day. In addition, it is one of the most westerly occurrences of the striped big cat . Other predators living there are Indian leopards , striped hyenas , sloth bears , golden jackals , honey badgers , reed cats and small mongooses . Of hoofed animals come sambar , spotted deer , nilgai , four-horn antelope , Indian gazelles and wild boars before. In addition, numerous species of birds live in the area, such as the migratory tree monster , which tourists feed in the park.
