Bronze males ( Lonchura ) are a species-rich genus from the finch family .
Systematics
It is assumed that the kind of the Munia from the native to Africa Elsterchen ( Spermestes ), another genus of finches, derived. It combines a number of common body features with these, such as the sickle-shaped pharynx and the mostly two-tone beak. There is also strong overlap in behavior and requirements for living space.
Some authors, especially in the English-speaking world, define the genus of the bronze male very broadly and, in addition to the magpie ( Spermestes ) and the dwarf star ( Lepidopygia ), also the pearl- neck samadine ( Odontospiza ), the rice finch ( Padda ) and the pheasant or silver beak ( Euodice ) added.
