The rice finch ( Padda ) is a group of two closely related species, the rice finch ( Lonchura oryzivora ) and the Timor rice finch ( Lonchura fuscata ), from the genus of the bronze male ( Lonchura ) in the magnificent finch family . Both types are very similar; They are characterized by their massive beak, the simple beak-angle bulges and their very similar courtship behavior. Timor rice finch and rice finch have long been treated as a separate genus Padda (rice finches). Recent molecular genetic studies have shown that this group of two species is phylogenetically located within the genus of the bronze male ( Lonchura ) and is closely related to the nutmeg bronze male there .

The birds are widespread in southeast Asia. The occurrence areas include Sumatra , Malaysia , Borneo , Moluccas , Philippines and Taiwan , Zanzibar and Timor . The range of the Timor rice finch extends only to Timor and the eastern part of Lombok .

Occasionally the two species, which are very popular as ornamental birds , are assigned to other genera by individual authors.
