The Moorish nun ( Lonchura nigerrima ), also known as the black nun , is a species of the finch family . The species status is controversial. It is occasionally classified as a subspecies of the Hunsteinnonne or as a north-western representative of the Forbesnonne . Despite the small distribution area, this species is classified as not endangered by the IUCN .

description

The Mohrennonne reaches a body length of about ten centimeters. It is similar to the Hades nun , but is smaller than this. The sexual dimorphism is only slightly pronounced.

The wings of the Moorish nun are black-brown, the upper tail-coverts and the hems of the tail feathers are golden-brown. The undersides of the wings are brownish isabel . The rest of the plumage is shiny black. The beak is blackish and brightens to a blue-gray at the base. The eyes are dark brown, the feet and legs are dark slate gray.

The Mohrennonne occurs exclusively on the island of Neuhannover in the Bismarck Archipelago . Field observations are not yet available for this species, but their way of life is likely to be similar to the Hunsteinnonne, Forbesnonne and Hadesnonne.

attitude

The Mohrennonne has not yet been introduced to Europe alive. The birds that were offered as this species in Switzerland around 1980 were Hades nuns.
