Peter Clement (ornithologist)

Peter Clement (born September 6, 1948 in Eastbourne , East Sussex ) is an English ornithologist , author , nature photographer and conservationist .

Life

Clement has been a member of the British Birds Rarities Committee since 1987 . In 1988 he became Licensing Officer and Species Advisor for the public corporation English Nature. In 2006, this organization was renamed Natural England , where Clements worked until he left in 2010. Its main task was to protect and designate areas of national and international importance for the animal world.

Clement's main interests are the identification of difficult families or genera of birds, especially thrushes , wheatears , warblers , finches and sea ​​birds , the migration and distribution patterns of rare migratory birds, rarities and wanderers. Clement worked as a tour guide for bird watching trips in the ecotourism industry for more than 25 years . His expeditions took him to Europe, India, the Himalayas, Africa, the Caribbean, Alaska and North America. He is a member of the Oriental Bird Club and the Ornithological Society of the Middle East (OSME).

From 1980 to 1985, Clement was editor of the London Bird Report . For volumes 5 and 6 of the Birds of the Western Palearctic encyclopedia , he wrote the sections on wheatears and warblers in 1988 and 1992 . In 1990 he was the editor of Red Data Birds in Britain . In 1993 he published his work Finches and Sparrows: An Identification Guide and in 2000 Thrushes , which is one of the standard works on chokes. In 1993 he wrote a series of articles on the origin of species for Birding World magazine in collaboration with Steve Gantlett, and in 1987 in British Birds he wrote articles on the field identification of Western Palearctic wheatears . For the eleventh volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World (2006, Old World Flycatchers to Old World Warblers ) he co-authored the articles on the families of the flycatchers , monarchs , stalk warblers and warblers .
