description

The Arfaknonne reaches a body length of ten centimeters and is one of the rather small species of finch. There is no sexual dimorphism . The Arfan nun's head has a narrow white headband. The reins and the eye area are also white. The rest of the head is whitish brown-gray. The light color merges into the dark brown of the back and wings in the neck. The throat, the goiter area and the front breast are black-brown. A gray-white band separates the front breast from the yellowish chestnut brown of the rest of the underside of the body. The feathers of the upper tail cover are straw yellow at the tip, the brown tail feathers are also lined with yellow. The eyes are dark and the beak is gray.

Distribution area and way of life

According to the current state of knowledge, the distribution area of the Arfaknonne is very small. It exclusively covers the area of the Anggi Lakes in the Arfak Mountains on the Vogelkop Peninsula of New Guinea . However, it cannot be ruled out that the Arfaknonne can also be found in other areas of this little-explored region. However, it has never been observed in neighboring lakes before. The habitat of the Arfaknonne is grassland at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level.

Only the black-breasted nun was originally a fine finch species in this area. In the meantime, however, six other species of the bronze male genus have settled in this area as cultural followers . Among other things, the thick-billed nun , splendid nun , gray-headed nun , brown-breasted nun , cave nun and the mourning bronze male occur in this region.
