The Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune ) is a public university in western India . The 1.66 km² campus is located in the northwest of Pune , the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra . The university was founded in 1948 and is one of the leading universities in India. It is divided into 52 departments and research centers, 6 interdisciplinary centers, 466 graduate colleges and 232 other recognized institutions.
With almost 500,000 students, the university is currently one of the world's largest universities.
history
The foundation goes back to the Poona Act , which was passed on February 10, 1948 by the parliament of the then state of Bombay . Bal Gangadhar Kher , in his capacity as Chief Minister of Bombay and Minister of Education of the Government of Bombay, made a significant contribution to ensuring that the university was provided with appropriate foundation funds and the campus.
In 1949 18 colleges and universities of applied sciences were affiliated and over 8,000 students were enrolled.
