Nalanda University Bill

On March 28, 2006, the 11th President of India, A. PJ Abdul Kalam , proposed the idea of rebuilding a university in Nalanda in a speech in the regional parliament of the state of Bihar. The draft law for the re-establishment of Nalanda University was passed on August 21, 2010 in the upper house and on August 26, 2010 in the lower house of the Indian parliament. The draft received presidential approval on September 21, 2010 and became law. The university was founded on November 25th.

International funding

Due to the international importance of the original university location, the 16 member states of the East Asia Summit declared their support in January 2007. The university has received US $ 1.8 million in financial support from member states including Australia, China, Thailand, Laos and Indonesia.

It is estimated that the cost of building the new campus will be around $ 500 million, with another $ 500 million estimated for infrastructure in the area. Therefore, the university seeks further donations from governments, private individuals and religious associations.

The government of Bihar State gave the university over 179 hectares of land to build the new campus. The university is also considered a dream of the Prime Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar .

Infrastructure and architecture

An international architecture competition was held to plan the new campus. The Indian office Vastu Shilpa Consultants emerged as the winner of this competition with a design that provides for zero consumption of energy, water and waste.

Courses

The first academic period of the newly founded university began on September 1, 2014 with 15 students in the fields of history and environmental sciences. A hotel run by the local tourism authority provided accommodation for the first students.
