The Annamalai University ( Tamil : அண்ணாமலைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் Aṇṇāmalaip palkalaikkaḻakam ) is a university in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in Annamalai Nagar on the outskirts of the city of Chidambaram in the Cuddalore district . The university was formally founded in 1928, began teaching in 1929 and is named after its founder Annamalai Chettiar . Today it is worn by the state of Tamil Nadu.

The predecessor institution of Annamalai University was the Sri Meenakshi College , founded in 1920 . It was created by Annamalai Chettiar (1881-1948), a wealthy businessman and philanthropist . Donated from the Chettiar caste . Annamalai Chettiar Chidambaram, which has great religious significance because of the Nataraja Temple , was chosen as the location . In the same year the British colonial government awarded Annamalai Chettiar the hereditary honorary title " Raja of Chettinad " because of his services to founding the university . Until his death, Annamalai Chettiar was procurator of the university.

In 1929 the University with 7 departments (launched departments ). Today there are 49, spread across 10 faculties . These are the Faculties of Humanities , Natural Sciences , Marine Sciences , Indian Languages, Engineering , Education , Arts , Agriculture , Medicine, and Dentistry . Its extensive campus covers an area of ​​over four square kilometers and is located in Annamalai Nagar, around three kilometers east of downtown Chidambaram. Today Annamalai University has around 37,000 students (as of 2013).
