Itanagar is the capital of the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and lies on the foothills of the Himalayas .

It has a population of around 60,000 (2011 census) and is a trading center for agricultural products from the area.

In the rainy city there is a new Tibetan Buddhist monastery, a temple that is representative of the Burmese form of Buddhism ( Theravada ), and Itafort, a fortress from the 15th century.

Itanagar is the seat of the Itanagar diocese .
