Imphal is the capital of the Indian state of Manipur . It is the administrative seat of the Imphal West district and has about 265,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Imphal lies in a valley and is surrounded by forested mountains. The city's airport ( IATA code : IMF; location ) has connections with Delhi , Calcutta , Guwahati and Aizawl .

Imphal has a university. In the city are the ruins of the Palace of Kangla and there are several monuments that commemorate World War II . The Manipur State Museum exhibits objects and pictures from the history of the state of Manipur. A market in the city center, where only women sell their wares, is particularly worth seeing.
