history
In the late 19th century, the British conquered the region and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. The district belonged to the Imphal district until June 17, 1997 . At that time, Imphal District was divided into the two districts of Imphal East and Imphal West .

Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Imphal West district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was more than 16 percent (16.56%). In those ten years the population increased by more than 70,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:
Significant places
There are five settlements in the district with more than 10,000 residents. These settlements are Lamjaotongba, Lilong (partially), Mayang Imphal, Samurou (partially) and Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar. The urban population still makes up over 60 percent of the total population because of the many places with more than 5000 inhabitants. The district also includes the western districts of the city of Imphal (193,459 people; in the Imphal East district another 83,737 residents).
District population by gender
The district often had - very unusual for India - more female and male residents. Between 1951 and 1971 the proportion of men increased slightly. But it is now falling again and the proportions of both sexes are within a normal range.
