The Senapati district is a district in the Indian state of Manipur . The administrative seat is the eponymous place Senapati .

geography

The Senapati district is in the north of Manipur. The area of the district is 3271 square kilometers. Large parts of the district are mountainous and are drained by numerous rivers and streams. The majority of the district is at an altitude of well over 1000 meters above sea level. In summer the daytime temperatures reach 34 degrees. Because of the altitude, temperatures drop to 3 degrees at night in the colder months. The amount of rain varies widely and varies locally from 671 mm to 1454 mm per year.

Neighboring districts are Ukhrul in the east, Imphal East and Imphal West in the south and Tamenglong in the west. In the north, the district borders on the state of Nagaland .

history

In the late 19th century, the British conquered the region and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. The district was created on November 12, 1969 by dividing the Manipur territory into five districts. From November 12, 1969 to July 15, 1983, today's district was named Manipur North . On December 6, 2016, part of the district was separated. The new district of Kangpokpi emerged from this .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Senapati district has 479,148 inhabitants. With 146 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is relatively densely populated. The district is nevertheless clearly rural. Of the residents, 471,672 people (98.44%) live in rural communities and 7,476 people in urban areas.

The Senapati district belongs to the areas of Manipur which are almost entirely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them (2011) were 419,210 people (87.49 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 1,000 people in 2011 (0.21 percent of the district's population).

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Senapati district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 1991–2011 was around 130 percent (129.91%). In these twenty years the population increased by around 270,000 people. Due to a war conflict, a full census could not be carried out in 2001. The population could only be determined in three out of six sub-divisions (in Sadar Hill East, Sadar Hill West and Saitu-Gamphazol). The following table shows the exact numbers:

Significant places

There is only one urban settlement in the district, Kangpokpi (Census Town, 7,476 residents). The urban population makes up only 1.56 percent of the total population.

District population by gender

The district originally had - very unusual for India - more female and male residents. The proportion of men has risen sharply since 1951. This in step with other regions of India.

education

Despite significant efforts, the goal of full literacy has not yet been achieved. While almost 90% of men can read and write in the cities, the literacy rate of women in rural areas is less than 60%. There are also significant differences among the six sub-divisions. The sub-division Pao – Mata has the highest proportion of illiterate people with 52.65%, the lowest value with 24.51% is the sub-division Saitu – Gamphazol. But education has made huge strides in the last few decades. The following table shows the development:
