The Bishnupur district is a district in the Indian state of Manipur . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Bishnupur .

The Bishnupur district lies in the middle of Manipur. Neighboring districts are Imphal West in the north and east, Thoubal in the east, Churachandpur in the south and west, and Senapati in the northwest. The Bishnupur District is divided into the three sub-divisions Bishnupur, Moirang and Nambol.

The area of ​​the Bishnupur district is 496 square kilometers. The district is located in the Manipur Valley (also Imphal Valley). This is limited by some hills in the north of the district (Ishok 947 m, Maibam Lokpaching 892 m and Laithouching 838 m). A significant part of the district is covered by Lake Loktak .

The Keibul Lamjao National Park is rich in rare flora. Many rare animals (deer, otters and bird species) also live in the reserve.

history

In the Middle Ages the district was part of a Meitei kingdom. In the late 19th century, the British conquered the area and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. Until 1983, today's district belonged to the Manipur Central district . Since then it has been an independent district within today's boundaries.

According to the 2011 census, the Bishnupur district has 237,399 inhabitants. With 479 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. The district is clearly rural. But the degree of urbanization is growing.

The Bishnupur district is one of the areas of Manipur that are populated by the Meitei people. According to the 2011 census, members of the “tribal population” ( scheduled tribes ) only make up 3,287 people (1.38 percent of the district's population ). By far the largest group are the Kom . Other important groups are the Kabui and Thadou . The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 22,113 people in 2011 (9.31 percent of the district's population).

As everywhere in India, the population in the Bishnupur district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was around 14 percent (13.93%). In those ten years the population increased by nearly 30,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:

Significant places

The most populous town in the district is Moirang with almost 20,000 residents. Other important places with more than 10,000 inhabitants are and the main town Bishnupur. The urban population makes up 36.86 percent of the total population.

The majority of the population of Bishnupur District speaks Meitei , a Tibetan-Burmese language recognized as a regional official language ( scheduled language ) . Only around 1 percent do not speak any Tibetan-Burmese language as their mother tongue (Hindi, Bengali, Nepali etc.). These persons are almost entirely immigrants from other regions of the Indian subcontinent.

Population of the district by confession

The majority of the residents profess Hinduism. Significant religious minorities are the followers of traditional religions with around 16 percent and the Muslims with around 8 percent of the population.
