The Thoubal District is a district in the Indian state of Manipur . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Thoubal .

geography

The Thoubal district is located in the center of Manipur. Large parts of the district are highland plains along the numerous rivers. There are also two large lakes, Ikot Pat and Pumlen Pat . Part of the Thoubal district to the east and south of the area is hilly. The area of the district is 514 square kilometers. In the warm season the temperatures are between 31 and 38 degrees. Because of the altitude, temperatures drop to 2 degrees in the colder months.

Neighboring districts are Imphal East in the north, Senapati in the north and northeast, Chandel in the east and south, Churachandpur in the southwest, Bishnupur in the west and Imphal West in the west and northwest. The Thoubal District is (as of 2018) divided into the six sub-divisions Heirok, Irong Chesaba, Khongjom, Lilong, Thoubal and Yairipok.

history

In the late 19th century, the British conquered the region and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. The district was created in 1983 from parts of what was then the Manipur Central district . On December 6, 2016, the southern part of the district was separated. This gave rise to the new Kakching district .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Thoubal district has 422,168 inhabitants. With 821 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. The district is clearly rural. Of the residents, 270,835 people (64.15%) live in rural communities and 151,333 people in urban areas.

The Thoubal district is one of the areas of Manipur that are only sparsely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 1808 people (0.43 percent of the district population). The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 40,593 people in 2011 (9.63 percent of the district's population). In the 2011 three districts of Kakching, Lilong and Thoubal, the majority of the tribal population (1154 of 1808 people) and the Dalits (39,391 of 40,593 people) lived in the district of Kakching, which split off in 2016 and became a separate district.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Thoubal district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was around 16 percent (15.94%). In these ten years the population increased by more than 58,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:
