The Imphal East District is a district in the Indian state of Manipur . The administrative seat is in Porompat .

geography

The Imphal East district is mostly in the center of Manipur. In the far west lies the Jiribam sub-division as an exclave. The area of the district is 709 square kilometers. Large parts of the district are mountainous and are drained by numerous rivers and streams. In summer, daytime temperatures reach peaks of around 40 degrees. Because of the altitude, temperatures drop down to 1 degree at night in the colder months. The amount of rain varies greatly and varies from 813 mm to 3400 mm per year.

Neighboring districts are Senapati District in the north and east, Thoubal in the south and Imphal West in the west. The Jiribam exclave is bordered by the state of Assam to the west and north, the Tamenglong district to the northeast and east, and the Churachandpur district to the east and south .

history

In the late 19th century, the British conquered the region and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. The district belonged to the Manipur Central district until 1969 . From then until June 17, 1997 to the Imphal district . At that time, Imphal District was divided into the two districts of Imphal East and Imphal West . On December 6, 2016, the western exclave, the Jiribam sub-division, was separated from Imphal East. The new Jiribam District arose from this .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Imphal East district has 456,113 residents. With 643 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 456,113 residents, 272,906 people (59.83%) live in rural communities and 183,207 people in urban areas.

The Imphal East district belongs to the areas of Manipur that are only sparsely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). There are only two settlements with more than 10,000 residents in the district. The two settlements are Thongju and Kshetrigao. The urban population still makes up over 40 percent of the total population because of the many places with more than 5000 residents. The eastern districts of the city of Imphal also belong to the district .

District population by gender

The district originally had - very unusual for India - more female and male residents. Between 1951 and 1991 the proportion of men increased sharply. But it is now falling again and the proportions of both sexes are within a normal range.
