Brewery in Dessau-Roßlau

The Roßlau Brewery is a monument in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

Origin and description of the building

When the Roßlau brewery burned down on July 12, 1827 , Gottfried Bandhauer , the then building director of Anhalt-Köthen , to which Roßlau had belonged since 1797, managed to find a replacement in a very short time. He probably went back to his design for the sheepfold in Grimschleben and modified it according to the requirements. Both buildings consist of one room each on the ground floor and one on the top floor and also have similar roof structures. With this very simple interior design, Bandhauer created a brewery that was able to resume operations on December 15, 1827.

The Roßlau Stadtbrauhaus has a facade that is enlivened by a vertical structure with six wide pilasters and a horizontal structure with rectangular windows. The necessary chimneys were cleverly hidden or included so that the industrial building on the market was not perceived as disturbing. The brewery has not been used as such for about 100 years. Subsequent renovations changed the interior and created new window openings, which only minimally disrupt the overall impression. The ventilation of the attic was cleverly solved by means of circumferential openings on the tent mansard roof.

effect

The brewery still shapes the market square today and is one of the most important buildings in Roßlaus. Already in Lindner's history and description of the state of Anhalt from 1833 it says: The city brewery built a few years ago on the market is just as functional as it is beautiful and attracts the attention of travelers. For Wilhelm van Kempen (1928) it is the perfect combination of the simplicity of classicism with the need for a utility building, which defines the true size of the brewery and which already develops from the floor plan. Instead of overloading jewelry, simple but effective design details were used here.
