Rajkot was a princely state of British India in the center of the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now the state of Gujarat . Its capital was the place Rajkot . The principality was founded in 1620 by Thakur Sahib Vibhaji Ajoji, a grandson of the Jam Sataji of Nawanagar . Rajkot was under the rule of the Grand Mogul from 1720–32 and was a British protectorate from 1807 / 18–1947. In 1921 it had an area of 730 km² and 61,000 inhabitants.

On August 15, 1947, Rajkot became a member of the Saurashtra State Union and on February 15, 1948, it joined India (see History of India ). On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Bombay . With the partition of Bombay on May 1, 1960, Rajkot came to Gujarat .
