Porbandar ( Gujarati : પોરબંદર , Porabandar ) is a coastal city on the Saurashtra peninsula in the Indian state of Gujarat . It is the capital of the Porbandar district and has around 152,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Excavations around Porbandar have shown that the area was settled 3500 years ago during the late Harappa culture . Porbandar was the capital of a Rajput princely state , which was called Porbandar since 1785 .

The main line of business is fishing; The largest employer in this branch is the exporting company Silver Seafood. Porbandar has an airport and a seaport that was only built at the end of the 20th century.

Porbandar is also of tourist interest as the birthplace of the Indian independence fighter Mohandas Gandhi (called Mahatma ). His birthplace is developed as a place of rest.
