Porbandar was a princely state of British India in the west of the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now the state of Gujarat . The principality was founded in 1193 by a Rajput expelled from Morvi . From Nawanagar originating Jethwa - Dynasty ruled from 1542. capitals were 1307 Ranpur , from 1574 Chhaya and 1785 Porbandar they serving the Great Mughals had acquired. At the end of the 18th century it came under the suzerainty of the Peshwa and the Gaekwad of Baroda in the course of the Marathas . Porbandar was a British protectorate from 1809 to 1947 and in 1941 had an area of 1663 km² and 133,000 inhabitants. The Rana was promoted to Maharaja in 1918 .
On August 15, 1947, Porbandar became a member of the Saurashtra State Union and on February 15, 1948, it joined India. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Bombay . With the partition of Bombay on May 1, 1960 Porbandar came to Gujarat .
