Morvi was a princely state of British India in the north of the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now the state of Gujarat . Its capital was the place Morbi (also Morvi ).

history

The principality was founded in 1697 by Thakur Sahib Kanyojisinghji Rawaji (1698-1733), the son of Rao Rayadhanji II. Tamachiji of Kachchh , from the older line of the Jadeja - Rajputs . Morvi was a British protectorate from 1807 to 1947 . The ruler was entitled to a salute of 11 rounds and was thus automatically a member of the Chamber of Princes . Rao Sahib Lakhdhirji Waghji (1876-1956) was raised to Maharaja in 1926 .

In 1941 the state had an area of 2129 km² and 123,000 inhabitants. As part of the "attachment scheme", the state gained 310 km² with around 12,500 inhabitants in 1943. The Hadala- Taluk and the Kotda-Nayani -Thana were connected on June 20th and the state of Malia on December 7th. On August 15, 1947, Morvi became a member of the Saurashtra State Union and on February 15, 1948, it joined India. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Bombay . When Bombay was partitioned on May 1, 1960, Morvi became part of Gujarat .

Infrastructure

Since 1890 it operated its own state railway. The lines, initially laid out as a narrow-gauge railway (2'6 "), were expanded to meter gauge by 1924. The routes from Rajkot to Wadhwan and Wankaner to Morvi were served. The route network was around 210 km in 1942. Morvi operated a state post with its own stamps from 1931–1948.
