Morbi ( Gujarati : નડિયાદ; also Morvi ) is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat .

The city is the administrative seat of the district of the same name founded on August 15, 2013 . Previously, the city was in the Rajkot district .

The city is located on the Machhu River in the north of the Kathiawar Peninsula. As a city, Morbi has the status of a municipality ( Nagar Palika ). It is divided into 14 wards . At the 2011 census, Morbi had around 195,000 inhabitants.

Morbi was the capital of the princely state of Morvi . In 1979 the city was largely destroyed when the Machhu II dam broke . There were around 2,000 fatalities.
