Valsad is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat . The city is located in the south of the state and is close to the border with Maharashtra .

The city is the capital of the Valsad district of the same name . Valsad has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 20 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 114,636 and that of the metropolitan area is 170,060. Valsad has a gender ratio of 955 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 91.2% in 2011. Almost 85% of the population are Hindus , approx. 10% are Muslim and approx. 5% belong to another or no religion. 8.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Gujarati is the main language in and around the city.

Infrastructure

Valsad is an important train station on the Mumbai-Vadodara mainline of the Western Railways (WR) and has good rail connections to all major cities in India. The current station building was erected in 1925.

economy

Agriculture, especially the cultivation of mangoes, is important for the local economy . There are numerous mango orchards in the surrounding villages, which are the only source of income for many villagers. The city also has its own mango market with more than 300 stores. This product is also exported abroad from Valsad.
