Jagenberg AG , based in Krefeld, is a holding company for investments in the fields of mechanical engineering and technical textiles, which today belongs to the Kleinewefers group of the entrepreneur Jan Kleinewefers .
history
founding
The company was founded in 1878 as a paper wholesaler by Ferdinand Emil Jagenberg (1817–1905) in Düsseldorf . Twelve years later, Jagenberg began building roll cutting machines for paper rolls. In 1895 the company moved to the site of the former Kraut-Mühle in Unterbilk , and at the same time management was passed to Ferdinand Emil's sons Emil (1866–1931) and Max Jagenberg (1867–1931). In 1906, a new production site was built on Himmelgeister Strasse in Düsseldorf-Bilk, the Jagenberg factory , the main building of which is the listed Salzmannbau .
20th century
In 1917 the company went public. 60 years after Jagenberg opened their first sales office in the USA, they founded the subsidiary Jagenberg Inc., Enfield, Connecticut there in 1960 . In 1971 machine production began in the newly built factory in Neuss - Grimlinghausen in a modern manufacturing facility for European machine construction. In 1980, Jagenberg Inc. started producing paper finishing machines for the North American market at its plant in Enfield, USA.
The Rheinmetall Group took over the majority of the shares in Jagenberg in 1981 and also acquired Gasti packaging machines, which were integrated into the Jagenberg Group. In 1983 production ended on Himmelgeister Strasse in Düsseldorf, and in 1984/1985 the administration moved to Kennedydamm in Düsseldorf-Derendorf . In 1988 Jagenberg took over the Kampf Group (Kampf GmbH & Co. KG), a specialist in mechanical engineering in the area of film technology. With the acquisition of Lemo Maschinenbau and a stake in the Swiss company Bachofen + Meier AG , which is active in the coating and coating systems sector in 1990, which was completely taken over in 1992, the product range was expanded. In 1991, with the acquisition of the French Erca Group and a year later with the takeover of Autoprod Inc., USA, the packaging technology division was internationalized and further expanded.
After moving into the new administration building in 1995, the company's headquarters were relocated from Düsseldorf to Neuss. In 1998 the newly built production hall in Slovakia was inaugurated at Jagenberg Slovensko. At the beginning of 1999 Basagoitia SA, Spain and Woschnik und Partner Maschinenbau GmbH (folding box processing), Mönchengladbach were taken over.
21st century
After the decision of the major shareholder Rheinmetall to part with the Jagenberg mechanical engineering division, the packaging technology division was sold to IWKA in a first step in 1999/2000 . The paper technology division was transferred to the Voith Group at the turn of the year 2001/2002 . In 2002, the sheeter division was sold to bielomatik Leuze GmbH & Co., which was sold to the US company BW Papersystems in 2015 after insolvency, and the converting systems (Bachofen + Meier AG) to the Max Kroenert GmbH & Co. Co. At the same time, numerous sales branches were closed.
In 2003, the folding box processing machine division , Jagenberg Diana GmbH, was sold to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen . Also in 2003, the film sealing machines division (Lemo Maschinenbau GmbH) was sold to a private equity investor.
On July 31, 2003, Kleinewefers GmbH took over the majority of shares in Jagenberg and the last operating subsidiary, Kampf. In the same year, plastic plant engineering from Kleinewefers (KKA) was integrated into Kampf GmbH & Co. Maschinenfabrik.
Acquisitions and divestments of companies
In order to expand its line competence in the area of film processing, Jagenberg acquired a stake in Pagendarm BTT GmbH, Hamburg, in 2004. Pagendarm specialized in the construction of coating systems for manufacturers and converters of paper and films and is a leading supplier in this field. To substantiate the claim as a leading manufacturer of machines for film processing, the majority in WT Wickeltechnik GmbH, a specialist for cutting and winding machines, was acquired in 2004. In August 2005 Jagenberg took over the business shares of the Küsters family in Eduard Küsters Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG, including all subsidiaries. Küsters took a leading position in the market for machines and systems for the finishing of web-shaped materials in the textile, nonwovens and paper industries. As early as November 2005, a joint venture for the joint operation of Küsters with a 60% stake was agreed with the technology group Andritz , into which the former Küsters Paper and Nonwoven divisions were incorporated. At the end of June 2006, Andritz took over the remaining 40% of Andritz Küsters.
In 2008, Jagenberg took over the Krefeld specialty company TAG Composites & Carpets from bankruptcy; TAG manufactures technical textiles, mainly in the flooring sector. In 2009 Jagenberg takes over the two companies Verseidag-Indutex and Verseidag Ballistic Protection - including their subsidiaries in Finland, England and the USA. The two Verseidag companies go back to VerSeidAG (Vereinigte Seidenwebereien, AG) , a historic textile group also with roots in Krefeld, which has specialized in technical textiles and plastic films after the decline of the German textile industry and in the course of various restructuring. The Verseidag Ballistic Protection division was sold to Rheinmetall in 2011.
In 2013 Jagenberg Paper Systems was founded, which concentrated on the repair and modernization of old systems and has been building new paper machines since 2017.
Business areas
Jagenberg's historical roots lie in mechanical engineering. This business field still dominates the group's activities today. The product range includes a. Foil cutting and winding technology, drive and automation technology or the maintenance and modernization of winders, rollers and roll cutting machines in the paper processing industry.
The second mainstay of the Jagenberg Group is the development and manufacture of textile floor coverings and high-quality coated fabrics (technical textiles), organized in the Verseidag-Indutex subgroup, also located in Krefeld. In addition to the dyeing and finishing of textile floor coverings, this business area includes, for example, products in the field of textile architecture, large tents, large-format digital printing and biogas.
