Irinjalakuda ( Malayalam : ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുട ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala .

geography

Irinjalakuda belongs to the Thrissur district . The city is located about 22 km south of Thrissur and 15 km north of Kodungallur .

history

According to one of several early traditions, Irinjalakuda points to an early city foundation at what was then a river estuary. The name is said to be derived from Inangikoodal (meaning "mouth"). The settlement history can be traced back to the 18th century, when the king of Cochin allowed Christian families to set up a trading post near Chanthappura . The city has been the seat of the eponymous diocese since 1978 .
