Nirmala Sitharaman (born August 18, 1959 in Madurai ) is an Indian politician.

Career

Sitharaman is a daughter of Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman. Her father was employed by Indian Railways , one of the largest employers in the world. Because of this, the family moved often. She went to school in Madras and Tiruchirappalli , obtained her bachelor's degree in economics from “Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College” in Tiruchirapalli and her master's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi in 1984. While studying at the university, she met her future husband Parakala Prabhakar . They married in 1986.

Sitharaman joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2008 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha second chamber for the state of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. From May 26, 2014 to September 3, 2017, she was Minister for Economic Affairs and Industry in the Modi I cabinet . On September 3, 2017 Sitharaman was the second woman after Indira Gandhi to the defense minister appointed by India. In the second Modi cabinet (from May 31, 2019) she was given responsibility for the Ministry of Finance.

Sitharaman is married and has one daughter.
