Gopinath Pandurang Munde ( Marathi and Hindi गोपीनाथ पांडुरंग मुंडे Gopīnāth Pāndurang Muṇḍe ; born December 12, 1949 in Nathra , Maharashtra ; † June 3, 2014 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was briefly Minister for Rural Development in the Modi I cabinet .

Life

Munde, who came from a poor farming family from the Beed district , completed a degree in commercial management at Ambejogai College after attending the Zilla Parishad School and began to get involved in politics during his studies.

In 1980 he was elected as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), newly founded by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and others, as a member of the House of Commons (Vidhan Sabha) of Maharashtra ( Maharashtra Legislative Assembly ) and was a member of this for a legislative period until 1985. In 1990 he succeeded in being re-elected as a member of the lower house of his home state and was a member of this until 2009.

During this time he served as opposition leader in the Vidhan Sabha between December 12, 1991 and March 14, 1995 . Subsequently, after Manohar Joshi of the Shiv Sena took office as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on March 14, 1995, he became Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of the Interior of the state and held these offices until the end of Joshi's tenure on October 17, 1999.

Member of the Lok Sabha and Union Minister

In the parliamentary elections in India in 2009 , Munde was finally elected to the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament , in the constituency of Beed for the BJP . In the parliamentary elections in India in 2014 , he was able to defend his mandate as a member of the lower house.

After the election, which led to a landslide victory for the BJP, Munde was appointed Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in his cabinet on May 26, 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . In the election for the Vidhan Sabha of Maharashtra planned for 2014, Munde was intended as the BJP's top candidate and was therefore considered a possible candidate for the office of Chief Minister.

On June 3, 2014, Munde was killed in a traffic accident in Delhi. According to the doctors at the AIIMS hospital to which he was taken, he had not suffered any external injuries, but rather suffered sudden cardiac death. After his death, the ministerial office was temporarily taken over by Nitin Gadkari , Minister for Land and Waterways Transport.

Munde was married to Pradnya Munde, a younger sister of the politician and former minister Pramod Mahajan, who was murdered in 2006 . One of his three daughters, Pankaja Munde-Palve, is also a member of the Vidhan Sabha of Maharashtra.
