Pramod Mahajan

Pramod Mahajan (born October 20, 1949 in Mahbubnagar , Hyderabad state , today Telangana ; † May 3, 2006 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian politician of the Janata Party and, since 1980, the Bharatiya Janata Party , which was a member between 1986 and 1996 the Rajya Sabha , from 1996 to 1997 a member of the Lok Sabha and most recently in 1998 until his death in 2006 again a member of the Rayja Sabha. He was also Secretary General of the BJP from 1985 to 1986 and 1992 to 1998, Minister of Defense in 1996 and several other ministerial posts between 1998 and 2003. Most recently he was again BJP General Secretary from 2003 until his death in 2006.

Life

After attending school, Mahajan first studied journalism at the Ranade Institute of Journalism, which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Journalism). He completed another degree in physics at the University of Pune with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Physics). He then worked as a science editor for the Tarun Bharat newspaper between 1970 and 1971 and then as a teacher at a school in Kholeshwar from 1971 to 1974. He also completed a degree in political science at the University of Pune, which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA Political Science). During the state of emergency in India , he was held in the Nasik Road Central Prison between 1975 and 1977.

After his release from prison, Mahajan began his political involvement with the Janata Party, of which he was general secretary in Maharashtra from 1978 to 1980 . He then moved to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and was its general secretary in Maharashtra between 1980 and 1985. At the same time he was secretary of the BJP from 1983 to 1985 and finally secretary general of the BJP between 1986 and 1987.

On July 5, 1986, Mahajan was elected for the first time for the BJP as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament , to which he initially belonged after his re-election on July 5, 1992 until May 9, 1996. During this time he was again Secretary General of the BJP from 1992 to 1998 and chairman of the Upper House Committee for Transport and Tourism between 1994 and 1996.

Member of Lok Sabha, Minister and Assassination

In the election in April and May 1996 Mahajan was elected a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament, and represented in this until the election in February and March 1998 the Maharashtra constituency 28-Mumbai North-East .

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee appointed him to his first cabinet on May 16, 1996 , of which he was a member until June 1, 1996. In April 1998 he served as Political Advisor to Prime Minister Vajpayee.

On July 5, 1998 he became a member of the Rayja Sabha again and was a member of it until his death on May 3, 2006. Prime Minister Vajpayee appointed him Minister for Information and Broadcasting in December 1998 and, in addition, Minister for the Food Industry in his second cabinet and was a member of this until October 1999. After Vajpapee had formed his third cabinet on October 13, 1999 , he became Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and held this office until the end of Vajpayees on May 22, 2004. At the same time, he also became Minister for on September 1, 2001, succeeding Ram Vilas Paswan Communication and Information Technology and held this ministerial office until his replacement by Arun Shourie on January 29, 2003.

After leaving the government, Mahajan was again General Secretary of the BJP in 2003 and held this position until his death. He was also the leading political strategist of his party in the states of Maharashtra and Rajasthan . On April 22, 2006, he was shot three times at close range by his brother Pravin Mahajan and died eleven days later from his injuries.

His marriage to Rekha Pramod Mahajan had a son and a daughter. He was a brother-in-law of the politician Gopinath Munde , who was married to his sister Pradnya.
