Sarbananda Sonowal ( Assamese সৰ্বানন্দ সোণোৱাল Sarbānanda Soṇovāl ; born October 31, 1962 in Molokgaon , Dibrugarh District , India ) is an Indian politician and since May 2016 Chief Minister of the state of Assam .

biography

Sarbananda Sonowal was born in a small town in the east of Assam to Jibeswar and Dineswari Sonowal. His parents were members of the Sonowal Kacharis ethnic group , one of the indigenous tribal peoples of Assam who speak Tibetan-Burmese languages . After completing his school education, he studied law at Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University in Assam and earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCJ) degrees . He is single.

Sonowal began his political career in the regionalist party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). From 1992 to 1999 Sonowal was the President of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), the student arm of the AGP. The AGP ideologically represented Assamese nationalism and agitated above all against the illegal immigration of Muslim Bengalis from neighboring Bangladesh . Sonowal was also known for his uncompromising stance on the migrant issue and was long considered one of the most promising leaders of the AGP. In the 2001 general election in Assam, he was elected in constituency 115-Moran . In the election for Lok Sabha in 2004 he was successful in the constituency 13-Dibrugarh , but was defeated in the following election in 2009 to the candidate of the Congress party .

On February 8, 2011, Sonowal made public his transfer to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The importance that the BJP attached to this conversion of one of the most prominent politicians in Assam was evident in the fact that Sonowal was personally welcomed as a new member by the party president of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari . As a justification for the change of party, Sonowal cited that the AGP had come too close to the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) and was neglecting the issue of illegal immigration. Sonowal rose rapidly in the following time in the hierarchy of the local party organization of the BJP in Assam and became a member of the BJP Executive Committee.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election , he was elected as a BJP candidate in constituency 13-Dibrugarh . In the newly formed Modi government , Sonowal received the post of Minister of State (Secretary of State) for Development, Business, Youth Affairs and Sport.

On January 29, 2016, the BJP nominated Sonowal as its top candidate in the upcoming election to the Parliament of Assam. In the election, the BJP won almost half of the constituencies in an electoral alliance with the Bodoland People's Front . On May 24, 2016, Sonowal was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Assam. He was the first chief minister from the ranks of the BJP in Assam, ending the fifteen-year period of Congress Party governments. According to analyzes, the BJP knew how to use the general mood of change during the election campaign and also to address Assamese-speaking Muslims during the election campaign. Under Sonowal, the BJP, which used to be a relatively exclusive party of higher castes in Assam, also gained a large following among the indigenous tribal population.
