Arun Sarin ( Hindi : अरुण सरीन ) (born October 21, 1954 in Pachmarhi ( Madhya Pradesh ), India) was CEO of Vodafone from April 1, 2003 to July 29, 2008 .

biography

Sarin is the son of Ramilla and Krishan Sarin, a military officer. He studied engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and economics at the University of California at Berkeley . Sarin started his professional career as a management consultant before moving to the Pacific Telesis Group in San Francisco in 1984 . From July 1995 he was a Director at Airtouch. From February 1997 to June 1999 he was President and COO there. Until April 15, 2000 he was CEO for Vodafone in the USA . As a result, he was CEO of InfoSpace from 2000 to 2001 and of Accel-KKR Telecom from 2001 to 2003. From April 1, 2003 to July 29, 2008, he worked for Vodafone again, succeeding Chris Gent . Since his resignation on July 29, 2008, the previous vice-boss Vittorio Colao has taken over his post .

He initially focused on the as yet undeveloped markets in India, Turkey and Romania. At his instigation, Vodafone made a takeover offer of US $ 11.1 billion for a 67% stake in the Indian mobile communications company Hutch Essar . Until then, in third place in the Indian market, Sarin now wants to become the market leader there with Vodafone.

Sarin has been elected as a non-executive director to the boards of directors of Gap Inc. , Charles Schwab Corporation, and Cisco Systems . In April 2005 Sarin was appointed to the "Non-Executive Director's Committee" of the Bank of England .

Sarin is married to Rummi Anand and has two children with her.
