Sir Cecil Clementi ( Chinese  金文泰 ; born September 1, 1875 in Cawnpore , British India ; † April 5, 1947 in High Wycombe , England ) was a British politician and governor of British Ceylon , Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements .

Career

Clementi was the son of Judge Advocat General Colonel Montagu Clementi and was born in India, which was then occupied by the British. After attending school at St Paul's School in London , he completed a degree at Magdalen College in Oxford . He completed this in 1901 as a Master of Arts . In 1899 Cecil Clementi became an employee of the British colonial administration. Since he was able to demonstrate a good knowledge of Cantonese and Chinese, he was initially deployed in Hong Kong . From 1907 he worked there as Assistant Colonial Secretary , from 1911 to 1912 he was also a member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council . In 1925, Clementi was finally appointed governor of Hong Kong. He held this office for five years; Kai Tak Airport was opened during his tenure . He then worked for four years as governor of the Straits Settlements ; he gave up this office for health reasons.

Honors

Cecil Clementi has been awarded several orders, including: Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG 1916, KCMG 1926, GCMG 1931) and Order of Saint John (KStJ 1926). In Hong Kong, among other things, Clementi Road and Clementi Secondary School were named after him, in Singapore a place in the West Region bears his name.
