The region is the largest of the country's regions in terms of area. Jurong East (part of Jurong ) is the regional center of the region. Overall, it is divided into 11 planning areas and the Western Water Catchment .

With a total area of 201.3 km², it is located on the western corner of the island of Singapore and is bordered by the North region to the north and east, the Central region to the south-east and the Strait of Johor to the west . It is therefore relatively far away from the city center. The region consists largely of residential and established industrial areas.

economy

The West region is home to much of Singapore's heavy industry, mainly the petrochemical industry with international oil and gas and chemical companies like Lanxess , Afton Chemical , BASF , BP , Celanese , Evonik , ExxonMobil , DuPont , Mitsui Chemicals and Chevron , Royal Dutch Shell , Singapore Petroleum Company and Sumitomo Chemical on Jurong Island and Pulau Bukom. From here, petroleum is imported, processed and then exported to other Asian countries. The complex alone generates around 5% of Singapore's gross domestic product and is one of the three largest export refineries in the world with the seventh largest oil refinery in the world.

In the future, a second Central Business District is to be built in the region , which is to be located directly on the Kuala-Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail line planned by 2031.

education

There are several important educational institutions in the region. Including the National University of Singapore , the Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore University of Social Sciences .
