The Strait of Johor (also Johorstraße , Strait of Tebrau , Tebraustraße ) is a strait about one kilometer wide that forms the southern border of the Malay Peninsula . Beyond the waterway is the island of Singapore , on which the island state of the same name is located.

There are two land connections across the Strait of Johor. The first is an artificial dam , inaugurated in 1924 , which leads from the city of Johor Bahru, in the Malaysian state of Johor , to Woodlands, Singapore . The dam, known in common parlance as The Causeway , houses a road and rail connection as well as a water pipeline through which the island state is supplied with water from Malaysia . To relieve the dam, a bridge was built in 1998 about 20 kilometers southwest of it, which connects Tanjong Kupang (Malaysia) and Tuas (Singapore). Officially this second connection is called Malaysia-Singapore Second Crossing , but colloquially it is also called Second Link or Linkedua (from English link “connection” and Malay kedua “second”). Nevertheless, a large part of the traffic still runs over the old dam, as this leads directly to Johor Bahru and is more conveniently located than the new connection.

Malaysia has been planning to replace the dam with a bridge at the same point since 2003. The main reasons for this are to make the strait passable again for ships, to enable ocean currents again and thus improve the water quality, and to relieve the constantly tense traffic situation in Johor Bahru. Negotiations with Singapore are currently underway.
