The Johor-Singapore Causeway.

The Johor – Singapore Causeway (Malay: Tambak Johor , English: The Causeway ) is a 1,056 meter long dam that connects the Malay city of Johor Bahru with the small town of Woodlands in Singapore . It serves as a connection to the Malay Peninsula for automobile, rail and pedestrian traffic and as a supply for drinking water from Malaysia to Singapore.

The dam is connected to the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Johor Bahru. This new border crossing has replaced the previous Causeway Checkpoints since December 16, 2008. The complex is connected to Johor Bahru's Inner Ring Road, which intersects the Skudai Highway. On the Singaporean side, the dam leads to the Woodlands CIQ Checkpoint, which replaced the older Woodlands Checkpoint in 1998. The Woodlands CIQ checkpoint is connected to the Bukit Timah Expressway.

The dam is used by 60,000 vehicles on an average day, with extremely difficult traffic conditions often prevailing shortly before public holidays.

history

The severed dam in advance of the Japanese invasion in 1942.

The impetus to build the dam came from the then governor of the Straits Settlements Laurence Guillemard , whose seat was Singapore. The Johor-Singapore Causeway was completed in 1923 after four years of construction. Approximately $ 17 million (in $ 1924 values) of the construction cost was borne by the Johor government. In 1942, parts of the causeway were blown up during World War II to prevent the Imperial Japanese Army from invading Singapore. After the Japanese captured Singapore , the dam was repaired. During the race riots in Singapore in 1964 ( Race Riots ), the causeway was closed from July 22nd to 26th, 1964.

For a long time the Johor-Singapore Causeway was the only land connection between the Malay Peninsula and Singapore. The second, the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link , was not completed until 1998.

The new Woodlands CIQ Checkpoint, partly built on virgin land , opened in July 1999 to cope with increasing traffic flow and to remove the soot that had built up over the years at the old customs complex. The old road to the dam was also diverted. The old customs complex at the intersection of Woodlands Road and Woodlands Center Road, built in the 1970s, was closed after the opening of the new border crossing, although the motorcycle route remained open until 2001. The new Woodlands Checkpoint also houses the premises of the Customs and Immigration Service for rail traffic, the Woodlands Train Checkpoint, which was previously in Tanjong Pagar station . The move of the Railroad Immigration Service to Woodlands sparked disputes between Singapore and Malaysia.

On December 1, 2008, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar was officially opened by the Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi . The new customs complex started its work on December 16, 2008 while the old customs complex was closed.
