Sumitomo Chemical ( Japanese 住友 化学 株式会社 , Sumitomo kagaku Kabushiki kaisha ) is a Japanese chemical company with headquarters in Chūō-ku , Osaka and Chūō-ku , Tokyo . It belongs to the Sumitomo group .
The company was founded in 1913 as a fertilizer factory. Today the Sumitomo Chemical Group has 164 subsidiaries around the world. a. is active in the industrial, fine and petrochemical, plastics production and agrochemical sectors.
The European headquarters are in Machelen ( Belgium ). In partnership with the Bayer Group , Sumitomo operates the chemical company Sumika Bayer Urethane Co. Ltd.
In 2005, the pharmaceuticals business with Dainippon was merged to form Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma , in which Sumitomo Chemical holds 50.22% of the shares.
In 2009 Sumitomo Chemical took over a minority stake of 20% in the Australian plant protection product manufacturer Nufarm .
At the end of 2012, Sumitomo Chemical took over the majority in the American company McLaughlin Gormley King (MGK).
