The Afton Chemical Corporation develops and manufactures additives for petroleum products fro. Afton Chemical is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. The global company is a subsidiary of NewMarket Corporation  (NYSE).

history

Afton Chemical was founded in Richmond, VA in 1887 as Albemarle Paper Manufacturing . In 1962, Albemarle Paper Co. acquired the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation and took the name on. Ethyl Gasoline Corporation was founded in 1923 by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and General Motors as General Motors Chemical Corporation to market tetraethyl lead as an anti-knock agent and renamed Ethyl Gasoline Corporation in 1924. In the 1970s and 1990s, the company grew through acquisitions of Ethyl Amoco Petroleum Additives , Nippon Cooper and the Texaco Additives Company . In 1984 the name was changed to Ethyl Petroleum Additives, Inc. and in 2004 to Afton Chemical Corporation . In the same year Afton Chemical became a wholly owned subsidiary of NewMarket Corporation , a group of companies specializing in specialty chemicals. In the 2000s, the company expands in Asia with locations in Shanghai, China, Tsukuba, Japan and Jurong Island and Singapore.

Products

Afton Chemical operates in the petroleum industry, with a focus on manufacturing chemical additives for powertrains, motor oil, fuel and industrial applications. Afton Chemical products are assigned to four different strategic business units: Powertrain additives, engine oil additives, fuel additives , and additives for industrial applications, such as lubricant additives, hydraulic lubricants and cooling lubricants . The last division came to the company in 2010 through the takeover of Polartech , a manufacturer of additives for metal processing.

Locations

Afton Chemical has offices in Asia Pacific, Europe, India, the Middle East, Latin America and North America. The company has a technology center based in Ashland, Virginia. The Ashland Technical Center is the R&D center for vehicle-based research for all strategic business areas that manufacture automotive additives for motor oil, fuel, transmissions and axles. The center is dedicated to research on durability, fuel consumption, emissions and new product development. Afton Chemical has plants in Belgium, England, India, Brazil, China and the United States of America ., A research laboratory in Suzhou, China, and announced plans in July 2012 to build a new chemical additives manufacturing facility on Jurong Island, Singapore, known, which is to be put into operation at the end of 2015.
