The Western Water Catchment is a planning area in the western region of Singapore. The planning area is bordered by Tuas and Pioneer in the south, Sungei Kadut, Choa Chu Kang and Tengah in the east, Jurong West in the southeast , Lim Chu Kang in the north and the Strait of Johor in the west .

The area is currently home to four reservoirs, Tengeh Reservoir, Poyan Reservoir, Murai Reservoir, and Sarimbun Reservoir. The western watershed is also a firing site where the Singapore armed forces use it for training purposes. It is also a restricted area and is open to all members of the public except military personnel from Pasir Laba Camp (South) and Sungei Gedong Camp (North).

The SAFTI Live Firing Area was put into operation in 1968 and rebuilt in 2008. The eastern part was put into operation in 2002 and expanded to Lim Chu Kang Tracks 11 and 13. However, it remained unnamed and could bear the name 'Murai North'.

history

The SAFTI Live Firing Area was laid out in 1967 and marked all around with 504 warning signs nearby. Before the fire protection zone was established and monitored, most of the residents and residents of the affected areas were relocated to Boon Lay, as the local pioneer residents and factories were relocated to the Jurong industrial area and only a few villages remained; By the early 1990s, they were all gone. On July 14, 1968, four villagers died and nine more were set on fire in the area, in Kampong Berih, one of the many rural villages in the area. Seven other villagers sneaked into Pasir Laba (on the coast of Johor Strait). of sampans to pick durians and rambutans from the many fruit trees in the forest. These villagers were injured by mortar shells while trying to collect fruit. There are many cases of intruders in the shooting range.

Numerous military guards are stationed at 11 entrance points of the Pasir Laba camp to keep intruders away. In addition, all other roads that lead into the area, such as B. those in the rural Lim Chu Kang area are gated and have warning signs that prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering. After all rural villages disappeared in 1995, the rural village names were even renamed to potential place names in the SAFTI Live Firing Area such as Wrexham, SAFTI City and Thousand Oaks. In September 2008, officials at the Training Resource Management Center (TRMC) standardized the signs on the shooting range in all four of Singapore's official languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil). Later in 2014, TRMC added on the sign: "Do not go beyond this line without permission - Live Firing in Progress". The annual general meeting of Pasir Laba Camp discussed how to keep intruders out of the firing area. In 2017 the signs were changed to "Do not go beyond this point. Live Firing Area - KEEP CLEAR!" Changed. The warning image previously used has been changed to represent the widely recognized symbol of the deadly danger posed by skulls and crossbones. These new signs are widely used near the western edges of the NTU , Old Choa Chu Kang Road, Jalan Murai, and Lim Chu Kang Road. These measures are only partially effective, however, and there are still many who step into the restricted military training area, particularly to pick wild fruits such as durian.

army

There are three army camps in the western water catchment area. These include the Pasir Laba Camp , the Choa Chu Kang Camp in Lorong Danau (201 Squadron, where it has Fighter Control, SAM Control, Surveillance, ASP) and the Sungei Gedong Camp (HQ Armor). A military airship is tied to the warehouse as part of tests for use in Singapore. In addition, there are various army shooting ranges in the western water catchment area - Multi-Mission Range Complex, MATADOR Range, M203 Range, several SAFTI areas and Poyan 300m Range. There are some hills in Pasir Laba. They are Peng Kang Hill, FOFO Hill, Bunker Hill and Elephant Hill.

In the Murai region there is the Murai Urban Live Firing Facility (MULFAC), the Murai Urban Training Facility (MUTF) and MEXCON. These will be affected as part of the Lim Chu Kang Road realignment project for the expanded Tengah Airbase, and the new SAFTI City will also be built. Lim Chu Kang Road between Neo Tiew Road and Old Choa Chu Kang Road will be removed and handed over to the expanded Tengah Airbase. The Pasir Laba Camp is accessible via the Pasir Laba Road, while the Sungei Gedong Camp on the Sungei Gedong Road, the Sarimbun Avenue and Jalan Bahtera is achievable. The boundary of the live firing area is by the Strait of Johor, Tengeh Reservoir (river), the intersection of Raffles Golf Course, Peng Kang Hill / Pasir Laba Camp, PIE, Nanyang Drive, Nanyang Crescent, Nanyang Avenue, Jalan Bahar bounding the imaginary boundary, Old Choa Chu Kang Road, National Shooting Center boundary, imaginary boundary with Murai Municipal Training Facility, Jalan Murai, Lim Chu Kang Road and Bahtera Track. Certain parts of Sungei Gedong Road and Old Choa Chu Kang Road are only accessible via secondary roads, as the army camps in Pasir Laba and Sungei Gedong are closed for security reasons. On side streets, CCTVs are in operation and connected to the Training Resource Management Center (TRMC). Signs are visible at the gates. For Lorong Danau, although connected by Nanyang Avenue, few to some parts are open to the public, with part of Jalan Sungei Poyan and Chua Chu Kang Camp being limited to 850 meters from Nanyang Avenue.

Pasir Laba Camp (SAFTI)

The SAF Training Institute (SAFTI) has been built on Pasir Laba Road since 1961, with preparations for the construction of the area. It replaced 10 squatters evacuated by the government in 1960 and earmarked for the construction of the Singapore Military Forces (SMF) western headquarters , training ground, and live fire facilities. During construction, SAFTI was housed in Jurong Town Primary School . Other potential locations such as Pulau Tekong have been considered since 1963. SAFTI on Pasir Laba Road opened on June 18, 1966.

In 1980 there were several tenant units such as the School of Infantry Specialists and the School of Infantry Weapons along with the HQ Infantry on site. The Officer Cadet School received the sole right to the name "SAFTI", while the other units were housed in the so-called Pasir Laba Camp. The Pasir Laba Camp was temporarily renamed SAFTI from May 31, 1986 to June 1995. As the Army grew , new training centers such as the Basic Combat Training Center (BCTC), the People's Defense Force Training Center, and the Infantry Training Center have been established to meet the various training needs. On July 1, 2004, as part of the reorganization of the army, the three centers were merged to form the Infantry Training Institute (ITI) in order to improve the training system and optimize resources through centralization. ITI was moved to Jurong Camp 2 in 2008. It offers better training opportunities and easier access to different training areas. BCTC was originally a small warehouse in Pasir Laba, but closed in December 2009 and became the Pasir Laba ammunition depot .

Currently, the anchor tenants of Pasir Laba Camp are the TRADOC Headquarters, the Specialist Cadet School , the SAF Warrant Officer School and the TRMC Operations Room. It enables control of various military training areas (Neo Tiew, Neo Tiew HDB, Lim Chu Kang, Ama Keng, Murai, Cemetery North, Wrexham, Jalan Bahar, Poyan Reservoir, Sarimbun Reservoir, Sungei Gedong and Jalan Bahtera) The HQ Specialist and Warrant Officer Institute, the Army Training Doctrine Command, the School of Infantry Weapons, the SAF Military Intelligence Institute, the 1st Military Intelligence Battalion, the HQ Armor, the 42nd Battalion Singapore Armored Regiment, the 38th Battalion Singapore Combat Engineers, and the 23rd Battalion Singapore Combat Engineers. Signals Battalion can allow entry into these areas. However, TRMC and TRADOC also control and maintain other military training areas. On October 4th, 2013 a new Multi-Mission Range Complex was opened to improve the accuracy of the soldiers.

SAFTI Military Institute

Officer Cadet School

The SAFTI Military Institute is a three-service military facility for all officers in the Singapore Armed Forces . It was opened on August 25, 1995 by Goh Chok Tong . Singapore Army officers begin their training at the Officer Cadet School before moving to SAF Advanced Schools and the Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College (GKSCSC) at various stages in their careers.

Although the SAFTI Military Institute is a federated facility, much of its heritage derives from the original Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute (SAFTI), which officially opened on February 14, 1966 at Pasir Laba Camp. The connection to the past is preserved both in the name of the new institute and in the name of the bridge that connects the Pasir Laba Camp with the new SAFTI MI. Officially called the SAFTI Link, insiders refer to it as the Link Bridge.

SAFTI MI was originally intended to be an "open camp" like the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy . Prior to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks , civilians did not require identification or security checks to enter the complex. The only restricted areas were the offices and living quarters. However, since the 9/11 attacks, like other military bases, the installation has been subject to restricted access and security checks are mandatory for all visitors. Unauthorized photography and filming are not permitted in this area, while offices and living spaces are designated as red zones, which means that camera phones are not currently allowed.

Reservoirs

Tengeh Reservoir

The south side of Tengeh Reservoir is the Raffles Country Club, and the golf courses can clearly see the reservoir. Construction of the Raffles Country Club began on October 29, 1987. The Singapore government made the second major property purchase for the project by requesting the Raffles Country Club to vacate its property as the property is the "most suitable location" for the Operation of the HSR routes provides After crossing the bridge, the tunnel portal was to be placed leading to the tunnels that would lead the HSR to the Jurong East terminus. The site must be cleared by July 31, 2018 so that HSR transition tracks and a siding can be used to temporarily accommodate a train near the border for safety or operational reasons.

On November 3, 2011, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) and the Economic Development Board (EDB) decided to install floating solar panels on Tengeh Reservoir, which is part of the S $ 11 million project. This is the first solar panel installed on the reservoir / river and the western water catchment area (located in the village of Wrexham).

Poyan Reservoir / SAFTI City

The future training ground SAFTI City (formerly Poyan Court) will also be located there. It will include apartment blocks, condominiums, shopping malls, entertainment arcades and transportation hubs (bus stop and MRT station). In April 2019, some of the streets on Poyan Reservoir were also named Poyan Drive, Poyan Avenue, SAFTI City Avenue, and Danau Grove.

island

There are three islands in the western watershed - Pulau Bajau , Pulau Pergam, and Pulau Sarimbun . Pulau Bajau is a hypsographic island in the Poyan Reservoir. It is part of the SAFTI Live Firing Area.

traffic

The Pasir Laba Road is only a short distance from the Upper Jurong Road and ends at the Tengah Pumping Station on the SAFTI Live Firing Area, the Pasir Laba Camp and the Multi-Mission Range Complex. Part of Pasir Laba Road has been disbanded and renamed Wrexham Avenue, which has restricted access to the Matador and M210 areas.

There are very few nearby bus routes in this area - 172, 179, 199, 405 and 975. There are three MRT stations nearby - Nanyang Gateway , Nanyang Crescent and Peng Kang Hill , which will be completed in 2028.

politics

Before the 1997 general election, it was in Jurong and Chua Chu Kang constituencies. From 1997 to 2001 it is bounded by Bukit Timah GRC (Jurong) and Hong Kah GRC (Nanyang / Yew tea). From 2001 to 2011 it is bordered by West Coast GRC (Pioneer) and Hong Kah GRC (Nanyang / Yew Tee). From 2011 to 2020 it surrounds the borders of Chua Chu Kang GRC (Nanyang) and West Coast GRC (Ayer Rajah). Since the 2020 general election, it has been entirely under the West Coast GRC, with the exception of the remaining portions of the Chua Chu Kang GRC, which will then fall under a different division.
