List of Governors of the Straits Settlements
The governors of the Straits Settlements were the heads of the British colonies of the Straits Settlements on the Straits of Malacca . The main settlements were Penang , Singapore and Malacca .
Until 1867, the Straits Settlements were administered by the British East India Company , which appointed the governor. Thereafter, the Straits Settlements received the rank of crown colony and the Colonial Office determined the governor. In 1946 the colonies were dissolved.
The governor of the British colony Straits Settlements was also high commissioner for the Federated Malay States on the Malaysian peninsula, for British North Borneo , Brunei , Sarawak and, at times, Labuan . The Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands) and Christmas Island , which were previously part of Ceylon for administrative purposes , have also been administered by the governor of the Straits Settlements since 1886. Penang and Malacca was administered by local councilors under the supervision of the Governor of the Straits Settlements. In the former sultanates of Perak , Selangor , Negri Sembilan and Pahang , a permanent representative (resident) of the colonial administration was active after 1896 in the rank of resident-general who was subordinate to the High Commissioner; his decisions - except for religious questions - were binding.
