Sir Harry St. George Ord (born June 17, 1819 in London , England , † August 20, 1885 in Homburg before the height ) was a British major general , colonial administrator and governor of the colonies of the Straits Settlements , the Bermuda Islands and Western Australia .

Life

Ord was born in 1819 in North Cray , London, to artilleryman Harry Gough Ord and his wife Louisa . After studying at the Woolwich Military Academy , he joined the Pioneer Corps of the British Army ( Royal Engineers ) in 1837 and served in Ireland , West Africa , India and the West Indies . In 1846 he married Julia Graham, the daughter of Admiral James Carpenter . From 1855 he entered the colonial service and was first appointed as a special commissioner on the Gold Coast , then from 1857 as the lieutenant governor of Dominica . Then Ord was governor of Bermuda from 1861 to 1864 and from 1867 the first governor of the Straits Settlements appointed by the Colonial Office . During this time he tried to promote the colony's trade with modern steamers , which could reach Europe much faster via the Suez Canal , which opened in 1869 .

After his return to England in 1873 he suffered from a tropical disease . In April 1877 he turned down the post as Governor of South Australia . In January 1878, however, he accepted the position as Governor of Western Australia. During his tenure he promoted the construction of the railroad in the colony, but this put a strain on the colony's budget.

In 1880 Ord left Australia and settled in Bury St Edmunds . In 1885 he succumbed to a heart attack while staying in Homburg vor der Höhe .
