Life
Trowbridge was born the son of a farmer in 1920 and attended Andover Elementary School . At the age of 15, he entered the Royal Navy . In 1940 he was promoted to sub-lieutenant and served mainly in the Pacific during World War II , most recently on the destroyer Wakeful .
After the war, Trowbridge was stationed in Singapore until 1956 when he was given command of the destroyer Carysfort in the Mediterranean as a frigate captain . After his return to England in 1962 he was promoted to sea captain and led the supreme command of the Fishery Protection Squadron and from 1967 to 1969 the guided missile destroyer Hampshire , one of the flagships of the British Navy. From 1970 to 1975 he served as a flag officer .
In 1980 he was appointed governor of Western Australia. After his tenure ended, he returned to England in 1983 and settled in Portsmouth. He was the last British man to hold the post of governor of Western Australia.
Trowbridge died of lung cancer in 2003 . During his service, he supervised the renovation of the Britannia , during which asbestos was replaced; this was probably the cause of his illness.
