Friedrich Rudolf Schenck (born March 11, 1870 in Halle (Saale) , † March 28, 1965 in Aachen ) was a German chemist and mineralogist .

Life

Schenck studied physics, botany, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Halle , received his doctorate in 1894 under Jacob Volhard and worked there from 1893 to 1897 as an assistant. In 1897 he received his habilitation at the University of Marburg on the subject of investigations into crystalline liquids , then was assistant and from 1899 head of department at the chemical institute there. In 1906 Schenk was appointed to the newly created chair for physical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University. In 1910 he was offered a position at the TH Breslau , where he was associate professor and founding rector. After that, Schenck finally took over the chair of chemistry at the University of Münster in 1915 . From 1920 to 1925 Schenck was founding chairman of the Association of German Universities (VDH), the forerunner organization of today's university association ; 1929/30 rector of the University of Münster. In 1935 he retired and a year later became director of the “State Research Institute for Metal Chemistry” in Marburg, a position he held until 1950. He spent his retirement in Aachen. From 1933 to 1934 and 1936 to 1941 he was also first chairman of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry .

Friedrich Rudolf Schenck is the father of Hermann Schenck .

Honors

  • In 1933 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina in Halle.
