Frederick Bedford

Sir Frederick George Denham Bedford KCB ( January 1, 1838 - January 30, 1913 ) was a British Admiral in the Royal Navy and Governor of Western Australia .

biography

Bedford joined the Royal Navy in 1852, became a midshipman in 1854, and then a lieutenant captain in 1859 . After further promotions to frigate captain in 1871, to captain at sea in 1875, he later held numerous leading positions in the navy. In 1889 he was first Fourth Sea Lord before he was then from 1892 to 1895 Commander in Chief of the naval station at the Cape of Good Hope . After his replacement by Harry Rawson , who later became Governor of New South Wales , he succeeded Lord Walter Kerr as Second Sea Lord in 1895 and thus held the third most important function in the Royal Navy after the First Lord of Admiralty and the First Sea Lord .

In 1899, Lord Walter Kerr succeeded him again as Second Sea Lord, while he himself succeeded Admiral John Fisher as Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Station for North America and the West Indies in Bermuda .

Most recently he was on March 24, 1903 Governor of Western Australia. He held this position for more than six years until April 23, 1909.
