William Peel (Governor)
Sir William Peel ( Chinese 貝璐 / 贝璐 ; born February 27, 1875 in Hexham , Northumberland , England , † February 24, 1945 in London ) was a British colonial administrator .
biography
Since entering the colonial administration service in 1897, Peel worked mainly in Malaysia and in the following years worked as a district official, second colonial secretary and acting resident in various regions.
In 1923 Peel became an advisor in the Kedah Protectorate , before he became Resident Councilor in Penang in 1925 . Subsequently, from 1926 to 1930 he was chief secretary of the Federated Malay States , which consisted of the protectorates of Pahang , Perak , Selangor and Negeri Sembilan . During this time he was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1928 and since then has had the suffix "Sir".
On May 9, 1930, he was appointed governor of Hong Kong to succeed Sir Cecil Clementi . He held this office for five years until May 17, 1935. During this time he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1931 .
His son John Peel was also a colonial administrator and a member of the House of Commons .
